What is it about?
The Fund André Vander Stricht supports biochemical research, more specifically, research on biochemical action mechanisms in cancer. Through this financial support, the Fund encourages the research of young post-doctoral students.
The Fund André Vander Stricht collaborates with other funds that promote medical research in the field of cancer.
In 1942, Mr. André Vander Stricht, civil engineer and brewer in Ghent, founded the André Vander Stricht Foundation. The aim of this Foundation was to encourage biochemical and physiological research with direct application in the world of brewing, malting and food industries. Until 1947, the Foundation sponsored research on barley proteins, hops and melanoidins. In 1971, André Vander Stricht gave it a new life. It was at that time that the André Vander Stricht Prize was created. Every three years, it rewards young Belgian university researchers interested in the cellular biological sciences. The founder died in 1973. He was succeeded by Jacques Lambert and Jacques Vander Stricht. To ensure the continuity of the initiative, the André Vander Stricht Fund was created in 2003 within the King Baudouin Foundation. The first laureate of the fund was Jean-Christophe Marine for his research on the role of signal protein in cancerology with a focus on the molecular mechanism.
Awarded in 2023, for a period of two years:
- KU Leuven (Marlies Vanden Bempt) - Characterization of non-canonical EZH2 transcriptional complexes to identify new therapeutic targets in peripheral T cell lymphoma
- Université libre de Bruxelles (Evelyne Collignon) - An innovative epitranscriptomic approach to target cancer persister cells
The Fund is launching a joint call together with other Funds in 2025.
