Comparative Impact of Reconstruction Surgery versus Conservative Treatment on early Cartilage Degeneration Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: Profiling Knee Joint Loading and Biomarkers
2024
Leuven
Project lead by Sabine Verschueren : Up to 50% of all ACL patients develop post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) 10 years after injury. Inflammatory responses due to injury and surgery, as well as changes in knee joint pathomechanics are believed to be contributors. To date, the impact of undergoing early reconstructive surgery or not, and its relation to the development of PTOA, is unknown. This research proposal addresses these gaps, taking advantage of a large, randomized trial on conservative versus reconstructive treatment.
