Supporting families confronted with violent radicalisation

From September 2015 to January 2016, the King Baudouin Foundation organised a series of three seminars with the aim of reaching a better understanding of this phenomenon. Emphasis was placed on the support to be given to families of radicalised young people. These seminars dealt with the three main stages of the violent radicalisation process: the first on detecting the first signs of radicalisation, the second on providing assistance to the families once their loved one has left, and the final one on the sensitive question of that person’s homecoming. This publication presents a compiled report on these discussion meetings focusing on views exchanged between decision-makers, local authority representatives, parents of radicalised young men and women, police forces, representatives of the NGO voluntary sector and teachers. It will help build up expertise on a subject about which knowledge is still too patchy in our country.
