What is it about?
Strengthening democracy, fostering European integration and affirming the role of the Western Balkans in addressing Europe’s emerging challenges.
The European Fund for the Balkans is a joint initiative of European foundations (Erste Foundation, Robert Bosch Stiftung and King Baudouin Foundation) that considers, runs and supports programmes in order to:
- provide the means and platforms where informed and empowered citizens can take action and demand accountable institutions and democracy;
- improve regional cooperation among civil society in the WB region, based on solidarity and demand-driven dialogue and an exchange of ideas, opinions and action;
- support the process of affirming political credibility of the enlargement policy across the Western Balkans region whilst insisting on commitment to the principles of the Thessaloniki Agenda.
The EFB's ultimate goal is to contribute to vibrant democracies and liberal societies in the region through increased citizen engagement and improved regional cooperation, within the framework of credible EU membership prospects. The EFB has an annual budget of just over 1M EUR, a third of which is contributed by the Foundation.
